Andy Jaffe Sextet
“Come see Andy Jaffe’s new Taipei Sextet at Sappho on April 1st. The band will be playing selections from his CDs “Manhattan Projections”, “Arc” and “Chorinhoso”.
Andy Jaffe was born during the Truman administration and grew up in metro New York and Amherst, Mass, to become a jazz educator, pianist and composer. He is a renowned teacher, having taught at Berklee (where his students included Branford Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Claire Daly, Scott Robinson, Frank Lacy, Steve Vai, and others). He recently retired from directing the Williams College Jazz program for 30 years, where his students included bassist/bandleader and composer Chris Lightcap, Wang Leehom(王力宏), jazz critic Alex Gelfand and Kristen Anderson Lopez, and where he founded and directed the Williamstown Jazz Festival for 18 years. He also taught at Amherst College where his students included Darryl Harper (now faculty there) and bassist / composer Stefan Crump. He has taught and led his own groups performing throughout Europe (including the Toulon Jazz Festival in France, the Malta Jazz Festival, and performances in Eastern Europe, Germany and elsewhere), and has written numerous books and articles about jazz harmony and composition. He continues to teach in the MFA program in Music Composition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
He comes to Taipei every semester to teach at the Impact Music Program at TNUA in Guandu, and at SiZhuKong, and has also taught at FuRen and TNNUA Universities. His compositions are written for ensembles ranging from Piano Duo to Jazz Sextet to big band and jazz orchestra, and include a cappella arrangements written for Okai Singers.
