Ye Huang (Grade 10) was born in June 5, 1998 at Shenzhen, China. He began piano studies at age five, and clarinet studies at age nine with Yi Cheng, principal clarinet of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. Ye joined the Shenzhen Youth Palace Orchestra at 10, and he was the principle clarinet of the orchestra.
Ye’s father is a music lover. Ye followed his father for summer music studies at Berklee College of Music beginning since 2008. He studied clarinet with Berklee Professor Harry Skoler for three summers, took saxophone lessons with Berklee Professor Shannon LeClaire. in summer 2012,Ye has invited by his favorite musician Eddie Daniels and went to his home at Santa Fe for jazz study. In present, he is studying saxophone with Manhattan music school Professor Steve Slagle.
Since age 12, Ye has collaborated with many musicians in such cities as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Boston, and New York. Ye joined the YZ jazz quartet and performed few concerts at Shenzhen, Foshan, and Guangzhou in December 2011 and summer of 2012 and 2013. On 2012 summer,Ye was the 1st Tenor saxophone in New York Jazz Academy big band, and performed at St. Peters Jazz Festival on May 2012 in New York. He also performed with his Jazz quartet for concert “Shenzhen and Hongkong Jazz night” at Shenzhen Poly Theater in July2012, and did a summer tour in south China with a young quartet in 2013.
In May 2012, Ye Huang passed both Juilliard (classical clarinet) and Manhattan music school (jazz Tenor sax) auditions, and finally joined Juilliard pre-college, studying with clarinetist Alan R. Key. in Juilliard, Ye performed in symphony as 1st clarinet in 2013 and 2014. also performed Chamber each semester.
Ye moved to New York for academic study in 2011,study in Professional Children’s School,performed two times concerts for support this school financial foundation, In 2013, he passed LaGuardia Art High School audition and he transfers to this high school attend as a sophomore.in this music high school, Ye was the chief in orchestra(clarinet) and the top jazz combo(Tenor sax), he was 1st soloist in musical “Grease”preformed 8 shows in New york in 2013. In 2014 summer,Ye got scholarships from Berklee college of music for summer study, He was passed each test in this school and got top level each courses, also he passed three auditions and got the top showcase band will perform in music hall(BPC)in Berklee on Aug14.
Clarinetist Harry Skoler says the following about Ye, “Ihave had about 1,000 students in my life, but you are the best student I have ever had!”
Ye’s present favorite musician: John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, Chick Corea, Martin Frost. Ye says “I was born for music, and I’m very happy that music choose me.”
