Taiwan Tour • Lotz/Purves & Shih-Yang Lee 李世揚

Mark Alban Lotz – flutes
Alan Gunga Purves – sound objects
Shih-Yang Lee 李世揚 (piano)

An emotional roller coaster full of Imagination (Scottland/Holland/Taiwan)

Sappho is extremely proud to host this international world top of improvisers. Two unique sound architects who received staggering reviews on their concerts and recent CD meet Taiwans proud n joy Shih-Yang Lee.

Alan Purves plays all kind of sound objects and Lotz a multitude of flutes and electronics. They take you to a highly fascinating journey in new sounds in old and twisted new worlds. Exciting, unpredictable, between the dust of stars and a chicken farm, between classical and slapstick, between dream and nightmare, these two modernists tell a special story. Music as an adventure of the unexpected. Within this evening they will invite their friend and piano virtuoso Shih-Yang Lee to join the stage. A modernist of his own forming a perfect match and adding his own expressionistic improvisations to create a new ‘Taiwan flavoured sound adventure’.

“Musicians who don’t care about conventions are thinly seeded. The Netherlands has at least two: percussionist Alan Gunga Purves and flutist Mark Alban Lotz. ”

Mark Alban Lotz (flutes, fx)

“The grandmaster and unprecedented phenomenon in the Dutch impro-scene” (according to “Turn Om Je Oren”) travels for concerts all over the world. His legendary solo performances are a compelling trip to a very own universe of a visionary. With breathtaking virtuosity and fantasy, Lotz creates a crushing sound architecture. A jazz and avant-garde artist who can also embrace the pure beauty of music. Worked with, among others, the Chris Potter tentett, Don Byron, Indian Underground star Najma Akthar, David Haney Thomas Strønen, David Tronzo, electronic music pioneer Bob Ostertag, han bennink, Ernst Reijseger or conga legend Miguel ‚Anga‘ Diaz.

“The word of the new worlds of sound” usually picked up in the context of contemporary music is quite worn out, but with Lotz it is entitled.“ (Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, Germany)

Alan Purves
(percussion and surprising sound objects)

The Scottish Alan Purves is one of the most remarkable drummers of today. He calls himself “Squeakologist”, which means something like “pieologist” or “squeezeologist”. Surrounded by a whole battery of rubber ducks and other pinch animals and musical children’s toys, he does incredible things at once (whistling in nostrils and mouth, squeaky under the armpits and in the hands, and in the meantime drumming with the feet) and thus creating an absurd sound festival of a visual nature. His fantasy seems boundless and his sounds are often simply magical. It’s not for nothing that Alan also makes music for director Werner Herzog with Ernst Reijseger and has worked with Valentin Clastrier and John Zorn, among others.

Lotz and Purves have a long history together. They collaborated in the Lotz Of Music, Global Village Orchestra and the Kamil Erdem Quartet. As a Duo they have also given concerts with the guests: Jörg Brinkmann (cello), Alfredo Genovesi (guitar) Goncalo Lopes (clarinets), Kenzo Kusuda (dance) and Anton Goudsmit (guitar). Their CD “Food Foragers” is 2018, published by Unit Records.

„Draai Om Je Oren” over Lotz / Purves Duo with guitarist Anton Goudsmit as guest:

“The final piece was a largely improvised set by a trio consisting of Lotz, Purves and Goudsmit. That of course could not fail. The three of them belong to the top of modern (impro) jazz musicians. It was demonstrated with open ears that pure improvisation can produce exciting, melodic and also melodic music. Swinging fragments were interspersed with contemplative moments and also humorous recognizable music fragments were not shunned. I don’t know if the three gentlemen want to continue in a fixed trio. If so, then I recommend that some serious jazz stages still exist to book this immediately. ”
