“Four & More”
Juliet Pang and Didi Mudigdo
Synopsis:
Perth-based jazz vocalist and songwriter Juliet Pang shares jazz gems spanning Duke Ellington,
Charlie Parker to Miles Davis, showcasing her deep admiration for witty phrasings, playfulness
and the art of vocalese. Together with accomplished jazz bassist Didi Mudigdo, the husband and
wife duo premieres new additions to her favourite standards with English and Mandarin lyrics
for the first time in Taiwan.
Didi Mudigdo
A consummate jazz bass player and songwriter, Didi Mudigdo has performed in festivals and jazz clubs
around Australia, Japan, China and South-East Asia. In 2005 he was a Top 10 finalist in the 2005
Australian National Songwriting Contest (jazz category) and was the most-downloaded jazz artist on
mp3.com.au in the same year. Born in Australia to Indonesian parents, he had a multinational upbringing
living in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, then graduated from the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music in 1997. Since then, he has toured Japan, China and Southeast Asia performing
alongside fellow wandering musicians from USA, Europe and Brazil. He has also recorded with several
Sydney recording artists, and released recordings of his own, the most recent being Didi Three Live
(2008) which was recorded live at the Sapporo Jazz Festival in Japan.
Juliet Pang
Juliet is a jazz singer, piano-player and songwriter who features a growing body of original jazz
compositions and popular jazz standards. Graduated from the Australian Institute of Music in 2011, she
studied jazz under David McRae, who performed alongside Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan and Chet
Baker to name a few. In 2012, she released her live jazz EP “White Noise Live” that mainly consists of her
own compositions with her quartet. She is an admirer of vocalese bebop singers such as Jon Hendricks,
Eddie Jefferson and Annie Ross, and her heart is to successfully extend the music across languages to
different peoples someday. Her recent sing-and-play jazz performance with husband/bass player Didi
Mudigdo at Esplanade (Singapore) included jewels from Clifford Brown and Duke Ellington that she’d
penned Mandarin lyrics to, and performed in both languages.
Together with her husband, the two have also performed a repertoire of original jazz compositions as well
as latin and jazz standards in Tokyo (Design Fest 2013), Perth (Laneway Lounge), Hong Kong (Backstage
Live), Guangzhou (Loft 345), Shenzhen (Old Heaven Books), Dongguan (Hong Tang Guan), Kuala
Lumpur (No Black Tie) and Singapore (Esplanade Theatres by The Bay). Their compositions have
received radio airplay in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, while her voice is featured on the jazz
compilation albums Absolute Voices (2009) and Oriental Jazz (2013), both released by
Japanese-Singaporean label S2S Records. Currently based in Perth, they are working on their next jazz
original album together.
