When ‘Jazz’ is used as a verb, you know there’s some improvising going on.. – how else could you ‘jazz’ your mind?. Once the name of a (short lived) cocktail bar in north of Taipei, this is one of the absurd English expressions we get used to in Taiwan – yet this particular moniker has an ‘anything goes’, break-the-rules spirit which we deem to have its own cool. Which seems to reflect our treatment of numerous jazz standards, most emanating from the cool jazz era – with grooves in swing, latin, funk etc.; do we make it up as we go along – or is it deliberate? you decide.
