Klaus Bru / Adam James Sorensen: Freedom Is Another Word

Klaus Bru / Adam James Sorensen: Freedom Is Another Word

 Start Time: 8.30pm

Entrance Fee: $200

In this concert, a sax player and a drummer are exploring the chances and challenges of the duo format, and they’re climbing without ropes. Bru on electrified saxes (expect whirling notes, minimal cries, orchestral noises), Sorensen on drums and percussion (expect tricky, elegant, always groovy rhythms starting as a light breeze and becoming as big as a tempest), — and no bass, and no keys, and no guitar.

Free Music is rare to find in Taiwan, but Sappho Live is one of the few places where freedom is not just another word, but a concept to be explored and tested.

Klaus Bru

Klaus Bru is one of only a few saxophonists performing exclusively on the rare C-melody and the C-soprano sax—woodwind oddities which had their heyday in the 1920’s. These antiquities sound utterly contemporary in Bru’s hands, particularly when he furnishes them with electronic treatment.

Klaus Bru was born and raised in a little village in the South of Germany, and graduated in Jazz Saxophone from the Music University in Graz/Austria. He was a well-known protagonist of the Vienna Jazz scene in the early 1990’s, and the Berlin Avant-Garde art and music scene in the late 1990’s. In 2002 he moved to Taipei/Taiwan, where he became infused with indigenous music styles from various parts of the world.

Klaus Bru has performed with the main exponents of the Taiwanese jazz and avant-garde music scene, in 2010 he founded the jazz trio ‘I Have A New Band Now’. Together with Shih-Yang Lee, he is co-leader of the acclaimed world music improvisation group ‘Ka Dao Yin’. Klaus Bru has worked for dance and theater, and has performed and recorded with such diverse musicians as Franz Hautzinger, Peter Herbert, Michael Moser, Sunny Murray, Marc Ribot, Martin Stepanik, Sabu Toyozumi, Bilal Karaman, and hundreds more. Currently he shares his time between Vienna, Taipei, and Beijing.

Adam James Sorensen

Klaus Bru
