Tonight we bring you traditional Brazilian Choro music featuring Josh Schaffer on saxophone, Dabby Pan on xiaoruan, Bruce Peng on guitar, and Mike Kao on the pandeiro.
The style of Brazilian Choro originated in the early 1900s and was popularized by early Brazilian musicians such as Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim. Over the years the repertoire of Brazilian Choro expanded and now the number of pieces rivals that of American jazz. Choro music is very indicative to the culture of Brazil and has been used in other styles of music, including Heitor Villa-Lobos’ famous classical Choro compositions.
The ensemble can vary from a wide range of instruments and is traditionally played by the players facing each other in a more casual setting. The instrumentation can also vary quite a bit, but the core instruments are guitar, cavaquinho (small guitar), Brazilian mandolin, and pandeiro. Other instruments can include saxophone, clarinet, flute, accordion, clarinet, trombone, or whoever shows up and wants to join in!
